Exceeds expectations

Received the SP3800 on Dec6; it replaces an SP2200 which I have enjoyed. (I also use an SP R800 and SP960.) I have tried both Matte and glossy, 4X6 to (finally!) 17X22, and everything works as advertised. A very notable difference may be seen when comparing printouts side-by-side with those from the other printers--a subtle improvement in shading and coloring from the SP3800. I had not even noticed a deficiency in the earlier outputs. It seems trite to say it, but the 3800 output just seems "more realistic." I have one photo of a rainbow over Niagara Falls, with the walk below in deep shadow. The SP3800 shadow has enough shading subtleties that the objects on this walk may be discerned. In my case, the SP3800 gives me more than I expected.

Perfect scanner, yes, it IS perfection!

I had this up and running in about ten minutes from when I took it our of the box. And in one hour I had a 200 page document scanned into a PDF file. I also copied an old Poloroid photo and it came out identical to the original. I cropped it using the software that came with the scanner and enlarged it and it came out just perfect.

I like the way this scanner looks compared to most of the other Epson scanners I've seen, which are a bit big and boxy. It is light grey and about four inches flat, and very sleek. It has four buttons: email, PDF, photo, and preview which shows you a preview of what your scan will look like. I did have to push the PDF button three of four times before anything happened. Other than that, this is exactly what I was looking for in a scanner. The price is right and it does everything you want it to. It scanned an open magazine, both pages, in about 40 seconds.

There are two software interfaces, one called the home interface which is for dummies, just about four options to pick concerning how you want the scan to come out, and the professional option, which is the one I used but is also very easy to use but offers more options such as cropping a photo, changing the resolution, setting margins, etc.

In response to the review after mine knocking the design:
I am a freak for good design. That's one of the reasons I never got a scanner before now. I wanted an Epson, but hated the way they looked. I see no problems at all with the way this is designed. I have it vertically on my desk with the four buttons close to me. It opens sideways, not towards me. The two cords hang down off the edge of the desk. They plug in next to the buttons. There is no ridge to hook them into as the other reviewer mentioned, and there is no warning letter about where to put the cords. I am reading lots of reviews on Amazon that are just not factual and tell me that the person does not really have the actual item or he would not be describing fictional qualities of the item.

I always knew that when I finally bought a scanner it would be an Epson, and reading several online reviews of inexpensive scanners confirmed that this is pretty much the best brand.
This model just came out and meets a common need for an inexpensive, attractive little flatbed scanner that does everything, and does it all well. And it seems to have the highest number of dots per inch of any of the scanners under $400.

You just can't get a better scanner for the price.
I am very pleased with this purchase, and as always with Amazon's fast free shipping.
